These people [preterists] have caused a resurgence of the old anti-Jewish attitude that reigned in the Church for a good part of the centuries from the early 5th century Theologian Augustine until the beginning of the 19th century. Basically this was a period in which Bible prophecy was interpreted allegorically. Augustine initiated this practice in his monumental work called The City Of God. Stephen Sizer: Theology of the Land: A Beginner’s Guide to Dispensational Approaches (2000)

The basic text upon which dispensationalism is based is the Authorized translation of 2 Timothy 2:15, where the Apostle Paul calls upon Timothy to “… rightly divide the word of truth.”  Scofield took this verse as the title for his first book which is a defense of this way of “dividing” Scripture into discrete dispensations.
