The
Two Witnesses
"These are the sons of
oil"
Ken
Gentry (1989) In Revelation 11, the Gentiles are given the power to trample the city of
Jerusalem under foot for 42 months. When does this occur?
(1) This refers to the siege of Jerusalem from Spring AD 67 to the fall
of the Temple in Sept 70. Vespasian enters the Land in Spring 67, but
Jerusalem does not fall until 70.
(2) It clearly refers to the Jewish temple which existed when John
wrote, and which was the subject of Jesus' Olivet Discourse and many of
his parables. Who are the two witnesses who appear in Jerusalem during the 42 months?
(1) This is recognized on all hands to be one of the more difficult
identifications in Revelation.
(2) Somehow these witnesses relate to Moses and Elijah in that imagery
from their ministries appear in the passage (water to blood and drought,
v6).
(3) They also related to Zechariah's prophecy of the gold lampstand and
two olive trees in Zech 4:2-3, which speak of the rebuilding of the OT
temple under Joshua (priest) and Zerubbabel (governor).
(4) In both allusions we have reference to the original founding of
Israel as a nation and the re-establishment of it after the Babylonian
exile.
(5) Thus, the two witnesses represent the founding of a new order for
Israel upon the ruins of the old, earthly Israel. This is the church of
Jesus Christ. Remember: Jesus said he will take the kingdom from Israel
and give it to a nation bearing the fruit thereof. (Mt 21:43). Despite
the persecution of Christianity it shall arise from apparent defeat.

I think this is incorrect because the arguement is completly inferred with
no evidence from other parts of scripture.

Chapter 11 says that the beast will make war against them. This would
imply a larger number than two. In a verse about their bodies laying on
the ground for 3 and a half days it should read their body as it is
singular in two cases. So it would seem that this is a symbolic use of
the figures. Perhaps they represent the old testement since they came in
sackcloth. Just as john the Baptist was Elijah in the spirit so these
two can represent the spiritual force of the OT as it gives way to the
NT by way of resurrection. Just a thought.

ps I would sure like to know if there is a Bible study guide on
Revelation that takes the preterist view. Thanks

I believe the old testament and the New testament are the two witnesses
not two persons these books will witness against us at our judgment and
you can burn the bible but it alway resurects.

What do I think?
I think you have not taken Revelation 22:18-19 to heart. Why haven't
you?
What gives you any authority to ADD to Revelation??
Are you trying to receive the plagues and get your name removed from the
book of life??
Perhaps you are destined to do the acts you are doing?
18 I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If
anyone adds anything to them, God will add to him the plagues described
in this book.
19 And if anyone takes words away from this book of prophecy, God will
take away from him his share in the tree of life and in the holy city,
which are described in this book. Revelation 22
Do you also feel comfortable ADDING to Revelation from Zechariah and
Matthew?
