The writers of the New Testament all knew of Jesus' prediction of the destruction of the Jewish Temple (Matt 23:33,38 and other references). Consequently they knew they were living in the "last days" of the Jewish nation. All the references of "last days" in the New Testament have a contemporary context. Look at 2 Tim 3:1-7. Paul was writing a letter of instruction to Timothy. Paul said, "This know also, that is the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves...FROM SUCH TURN AWAY." How could Timothy turn away from such men if these verses referred to 2001 or later? The context here clearly shows that "last days" had reference to that time 2,000 years ago.
According to the Great Commission the Church is to "disciple the nations." That doesn't sound like things will get worse, but better! And the reason the Church will succeed in its mission is because Jesus said "All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye THEREFORE!" Praise God! The Bible teaches an eschatology of VICTORY--not defeat--for the Church in time, in history.
...yes, I (Bob) am a normal human being and sane Christian who loves the Lord and believes the Bible to be the inspired Word of God without error. I attended a conservative (Dallas Theo Seminary-type) Bible College where Premillennialism was taught and all other views scorned. Now I'm thinking that preterism is the most sound Biblical approach to prophecy. Why? Read on!
