Pre-, A-, Post- millennialism:

What Difference Does It Make?

Premillennialism and its teaching that Christ is to set up a one thousand year political kingdom in the world after the Church is "raptured" out of an evil world diverts attention from the real purpose of the Church. It despairs of the power of the Gospel to Christianize the world.

The Church shouldn't wait until 2010 to realize the error of premillennialism and its continuous cry of 'Wolf!" The present Pre- and A- millennialistic theology of many in the Church in the U.S. is a self-fulfilling prophecy: "The 'Last Days' will be dominated by evil; the Church age will end in defeat so why bother to fully carry out the Great Commission." And in the meantime society fails to be leavened by the Gospel--which is a "sign" of the evil "Last Days" . . . Thus the "Gospel" is an invitation to join the losing side until Jesus comes.

"The study of eschatology is an important matter for the Christian. What we believe the future holds for us and our children has a great impact on the prioritizing of our life's concerns. Eschatology should not be approached as if but an interesting aside to the study of Scripture. It is a fundamental aspect of it, having a great bearing even on the understanding of evangelism itself." --Kenneth L. Gentry, Jr., TGOTGC

"It would be easy to show that at our present rate of progress the kingdoms of this world never could become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ. Indeed, many in the Church are giving up the idea of it except on the occasion of the advent of Christ, which, as it chimes in with our own idleness, is likely to be a popular doctrine. I myself believe that King Jesus will reign, and the idols be utterly abolished; but I expect that same power which turned the world upside down once will still continue to do it. The Holy Spirit would never suffer the imputation to rest upon His holy name that He was not able to convert the world." --Charles Haddon Spurgeon

"The eschatological issue centers on one fundamental point: Will the gospel succeed in its mission, or not? Regardless of their numerous individual differences, the various defeatist schools of thought are solidly lined up together on one major point: The gospel of Jesus Christ will fail. Christianity will not be successful in its worldwide task. Christ's Great Commission to disciple the nations will not be carried out. Satan and the forces of Antichrist will prevail in history, overcoming the Church and virtually wiping it out--until Christ returns at the last moment, like the cavalry in B-grade westerns, to rescue the ragged little band of survivors. If you were the devil, could you devise a better, more 'spiritual-sounding' excuse for Christians to abandon God's plan for victory?" --David Chilton, Paradise Restored
