Pre-, A-, Post- millennialism:

Definitions and Advocates

Premillennialism

is that pessimistic view of the last things which sees evil dominating in influence over godliness until Christians are "raptured" out of the earth--an event followed by seven years of "Great Tribulation" on the ungodly which ushers in the peaceful, literal one thousand year reign of Jesus Christ on earth.

Amillennialism

is that pessimistic view of the last things which teaches that there will be a parallel and contemporaneous development of good and evil which will continue until the Second Coming of Christ at which time the resurrection and judgment will take place, followed by the eternal order--the perfect "kingdom of God."

Postmillennialism

is that optimistic view of the last things which holds that the kingdom of God was established at the first advent of Christ and is now being extended in the world through the preaching of the Gospel and the saving work of the Holy Spirit, that the world eventually will be dominated by Christian principles, and that the return of Christ will occur at the close of a long period of general righteousness and peace.

Postmillennialism names among its supporters Eusebius (A.D. 260-340), Athanasius (A.D. 296-372), Augustine (A.D. 354-430), John Calvin, Jonathan Edwards, Matthew Henry, Charles Hodge, A.H. Strong, B.B. Warfield, Loraine Boettner, John Murray and many of the Puritans. In referring to these men of God, I am not endeavoring to establish them as the authoritative word on prophetic truth. The Bible alone is the ultimate textbook of all truth. Rather I mention them to counter the belief that postmillennialism is somehow out of the mainstream of Christian belief.
