Free Online Books/MP: Peter J. Leithart - The Promise of His Appearing (2004) FULL BOOK at Google Books  'Leithart gives a preterist reading of 2 Peter. He defines preterism as "the view that prophecies about an imminent "day of judgement" scattered throughout the New Testament were fulfilled in the apostolic age by the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70, the event that brought a final end to the structures and orders of the Old Creation or Old Covenant.”

Extreme Christianity
An open letter to Dr. Larry Spargamino

By Dr. Kelly Nelson Birks

To the attention of Dr. Spargamino:

Dear Dr. Spargamino:

This is Dr. Kelly Nelson Birks. I am the pastor of Messiah Reformed Church in Omaha Nebraska. I am a Preterist. I am what you referred to today on the radio as an "Extreme Preterist."

With all due respect, according to what I heard on the show today, I do not believe that you are able to defend your futurist view against a real Preterist. Therefore in the interest of glorifying the Lord Jesus by rightly dividing the word of truth, and to offer a better explanation on what the Bible teaches regarding esachatology, I would like to invite you sir to a public debate on the subject of "What did Jesus teach regarding the timing of the Parousia?"

I am open to see this debate conducted "live" on the radio, or possibly if it can be arranged, in person at an agreed upon venue. I am the host of a weekly one hour radio teaching show here in Omaha on am 660 KCRO. We can do the debate on that show if you would like. I would very much appreciate a positive response to my challenge as many men that i have challenged to debate on the subject (Keith Mathison, Andrew Sandlin, Gary Hedrick), have all refused citing numerous excuses. I believe that they refuse to publicly debate me because they do not want to take the chance of being put on the spot in an open forum. I hope that your response to my challenge will not be like theirs.

I appreciate the fact that on the radio show today (Wednesday, 5/ 23) you did not condemn Preterists to Hell or say that they are in some way in an unsaved condition because of our eschatology. I am a regenerate believer in the Lord Jesus Christ, depending upon his grace alone to save me. I confess with my mouth, "Jesus is Lord, and believe in my heart that God raised him from dead." I know that I have everlasting life because of Christ's statement in John 6: 47, "He that believeth on me has everlasting life." I am saved by grace through faith and that not of myself it is the gift of God.

I wanted you to understand that you are not responding to someone outside of the faith of Christ.

I look forward to your response.

Sincerely in Christ,

Kelly Birks, Ph.D

Comments:

Dr. Birks has answered Seraiah. If one is going to exalt the creeds over against the scriptures at least be consistent with the creeds yourself. Dr. Birks is 100% correct when he insists that no creed allows for a third parousia. Although I agree with Dr. Birks, I think it is a bit much to insist that we drop the use of "2nd Advent." The 19th century Preterists like Desprez,Terry and others used it.
