Matthew 26:64 is NOT a "Preterist Time Indicator" Pointing to AD70 "In short, the usage of "Apo Arti" in Matthew 26:64 [Apo ("from" - Strongs 575) and Arti ("now on" - Strong's 737)] is highly suggestive of the themes that have been previously offered at this blog ; that is, a series of revelatory recognitions of the power and glory of Jesus Christ's dominance by friend and foe alike. Though the typically pret-friendly Weymouth translation would like to make Jesus say "later on, you will see.." this is not really honest. I would rather say that it was simply a mistake, but I find it impossible to believe that neither Richard Francis Weymouth ("If this belief ever obtains general acceptance the earlier date of the Apocalypse will also be regarded as fully established. For it will then be seen that the book describes beforehand events which took place in 70 A.D.") nor Earnest Hampden-Cook (co-editor and author of "The Christ Has Come") were aware of how important (ironically) a futurist spin on this passage is to uphold their Preterist assumptions. However, not only is there no sense of futurity in this very emphatic Greek phrase, but rather we see quite the opposite.

PRETERIST UNIVERSALISM | PRETERIST-IDEALISM

The Gospel, Epistles of John
and the Apocalypse

"The time is at hand."

F.W. Farrar "It has been usual to say that the Spanish Jesuit Alcasar.. was the founder of the Præterist School.. But to me it seems that the founder of the Præterist School is none other than St. John himself."

The Apocalypse of John | Maurice on the "Last Time" | Origen's Commentary on the Gospel of John | Was John Anti-Semitic?

  • John 14:18,20,22 "I will come to you. …In that Day you shall know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.' …'Lord, what then has happened that You are about to disclose Yourself to us, and not to the world?'"

  • John 21:22 "If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you?"

  • I John 2:8  “The darkness is passing away, and the true light is already shining.”

  • I John 2:17  “The world is passing away, and its desires.”

  • I John 2:18 “It is the last hour.”

  • I John 2:18  “Even now many antichrists have arisen; from this we know that it is the last hour.” (Compare Matt. 24:23-34)

  • 1 John 2:28 "Abide in him; that, when he shall appear (parousia), we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming."

  • I John 4:3 . “This is that of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, and now it is already in the world.” (Compare II Thess. 2:7)

THE DATING OF JOHN

Pamela Binnings Ewen (1999)
"In the Gospel of John, Jesus is described as healing a man who had been paralyzed for thirty-eight years, at the sheep pool in a building in Jerusalem that has not been historically identified by archeologists (John 5:2).  The author of the Gospel uses the present tense to describe the sheep pool: "Now there is in Jerusalem by the sheep gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew Bethesda, having five porticoes" (John 5:2 emphasis added).  The natural and reasonable inference is that the author of this Gospel was writing when the building was still standing and its porticoes." (Faith on Trial; Nashville, TN: Broadman & Holman; 1999; p.49)

The only occurrences of the term antichrist are in the following verses from the letters of the Apostle John:

Children, it is the last hour; and just as you heard that antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have arisen; from this we know that it is the last hour. They went out from us, but they were not really of us; for if they had been of us, they would have remained with us; but they went out, in order that it may be shown that they all are not of us . . . . Who is the liar but the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, the one who denies the Father and the Son. Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father; the one who confesses the Son has the Father also. . . . These things I have written to you concerning those who are trying to deceive you. (1st John 2:18-19, 22-23, 26).

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God; and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not from God; and this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, and now it is already in the world. You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world. They are from the world; therefore they speak as from the world, and the world listens to them. We are from God; he who knows God listens to us; he who is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error (1st John 4:1-6).

For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist. Watch yourselves, that we might not lose what we have accomplished, but that we may receive a full reward. Anyone who goes too far and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who abides in the teaching, he has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house, and do not give him a greeting; for the one who gives him a greeting participates in his evil deeds (2nd John 7-11).

Who was the historical John? What are the historical dates, locations etc.? I am speciafically looking for sources not in the Bible. I am also focusing on him more in the area of him as the writer of the gospel of John and not as the author of Revelation.

Does being dead wrong have any bearing on being "inspired". 2000 years have past and...um...well, we're all still here. What is really going to hurt Christianity is if the world is still hustling and bustling around, say the year 2050. With all the blockbuster movies out now, and all the "Left Behind" books, and all the internet sites that detail the exact way the end will happen in our age, the next generation will be obliged to do alot of explaining if it don't happen; Christianity will then be placed on the shelf along side the other world mythologies. Sure every age has interpreted the symbolic content of Revelation and Daniel to fit their current world events, but no other age has ever crystalized, and immortalized their interpretation in the form of movies, novels, web-sites, etc. Revelation has been interpreted and re-interpreted many times in the digestive tract of history, and if it gets re-interpreted again, I forsee a major religious bowel movement in the near future. Even today, one can read the exegesis of revelation and daniel from 20 different authors and get 20 different views. That is just the nature of abstract symbolism. I'm sure if the world survives till about, say the year 3000, there will be some crackpot sect super-imposing the symbols in revelation to various planets and galaxies.

Most of the Biblical scholars I have researched attribute the writing of the Revelation to St. John the Apostle. I have always believed this as well. Recently I read that the more liberal faction of Christian scholars say that the Revelation was written in a more "barbaric" Greek than the refined style of the Gospel and epistles of John. Is there any shred of evidence for this?

in response to the comment on march 19, 2004 Revelation was indeed written by the same John but he didn't have any scribes to help him write the book. John had scribes helping him when he wrote his other books. John wasn't educated that well, so Revelation was written in more "barbaric" language. western washington

I think that a diligent study of the scriptures indicate that the Apostle John is the only apostle that heard the Law of Love that Jesus gave. In 1Jn 2 he directly refers to the commandment that Jesus gave. Also in 1Jn 3:23. No other scriptural references by other writers about showing love directly refer to the command that Jesus gave. This is critically important in our day, as we transistion from the Gospel to the Gentiles (foundation--Apostle Paul's teachings) to the Gospel to the Jews (foundation--Apostle John's teachings directly referring to the commandment that Jesus gave). The scriptures also leave open the possibility that the Apostle John has never died, having inherited (literal) eternal life like Jesus has promised. Compare John 6:50-58 to 1Jn 1:1-2. Jesus left open this possibility in John 21:22-23. The Apostle John is called the beloved Apostle who Jesus loved because of John 14:21-23, in my opinion because of obedience to those scriptures. Regards.

To the comments on 25/4/04 in regard to whether the Apostle John may never have died. One question, what kind of body was John living in, a mortal or an immortal one? As to John 21:22-23, Jesus is pointing out to Peter that it does not concern him what He(Jesus)is going to do with John, his responsibility is to follow what Jesus wants him to do. The "if" in verse 22 is hypothetical.

They say that I never saw martyrdom, they just do not understand the nature of my martyrdom.Whereas the spirit of Elijah was with John the Baptist,my spirit,in a similar way has walked in the succesive lives of men up to this current life when I was called to Rise and awaken in this end time.I was not Vlad Dracul but I was with him, hence the myth that by the blood he was kept immortal.I was not Michaelangelo, but I pushed him, hence the monikor-"Divine".I was not John Paul Jones but I fought with him and yelled "I have not yet begun to fight".I was not Edgar Allen Poe,but thru the centuries of loss I inspired him to write "never more".A good story No?

Comments:

I believe that just as Genesis was a history of the past, the Revelations of St. John are a "history" of the future, and that St. John may have seen books that would be published, that is why he has such graffic pictures of things which we could only describe as caractures.

Much has come to pass, with the historical, real rapture taking place between 476-539 A.D., then looking after the 1000 years when everythign was done, "...In the name of Christ..."' we had what event that restored the church? It is all going exactly as St. John fortold including the New Jeruselem.
